Read Across America is important to Kid Builds a Library because it celebrates the power of reading and highlights the significance of books for every child. This week encourages students, teachers, families, and volunteers across the country to come together to promote literacy programs and engage in children's reading activities that foster a love for reading.
Celebrated every year during the first week of March, Read Across America focuses on inspiring children to read more while showcasing diverse books and authors. Schools host activities such as guest readers, book donations, classroom reading events, and community literacy programs. For Kid Builds a Library, this week is an opportunity to support schools, donate diverse books, and remind students that reading can open doors to imagination, knowledge, and future careers.
By participating in Read Across America, we continue our mission to ensure that every child has access to books and the chance to discover the joy of reading.
One Kid. One Book. One Library at a Time.
In 2026, literacy is still a major challenge in the United States. About 21% of adults struggle with reading, and 54% read below a 6th grade level. Nearly 130 million adults cannot read a simple story to their child. Across the country, 40% of students cannot read at a basic level. Low literacy costs the U.S. economy over $2 trillion each year. This is why making sure kids have access to books early is so important.
